Is the Mobile Detailing Business Oversaturated Because of TikTok and YouTube?

Viral detailing videos have inspired a wave of new mobile detailers, and many people feel the market is oversaturated. We looked at what the detailing community is saying.

The rise of mobile detailing in Orlando

One discussion started with a simple complaint: it’s hard to find experienced detailers among all the newcomers who started a business after watching detailing videos online. Everyone has to start somewhere — but customers want trustworthy professionals.

The challenge of finding quality detailers

Experienced detailers were frustrated by some of the techniques popular online, like scrubbing an already clean panel or door jamb with a brush. In real-world detailing, many of those steps are unnecessary.

Microfibers vs. brushes

A common theme was a preference for microfiber towels over brushes. Several detailers only use brushes where the product calls for it, such as on Alcantara, and rely on microfiber, steam cleaners and air compressors for most other tasks. One detailer with 30 years of experience called the microfiber towel the greatest detailing invention of all time.

Overbooking and mismanagement

Others criticized detailers who brag about being overbooked — often a sign of poor business practices that lose clients — and those who use excessive, wasteful amounts of foam.

The value of professional training

Many recommended checking a detailer’s Google profile and portfolio, and some suggested the International Detailing Association (IDA) for trained professionals. Others noted that certification alone doesn’t guarantee business: practical skills and customer satisfaction matter most.

The impact of social media

Short clips on TikTok and Instagram often oversimplify complex processes, spreading misconceptions among viewers. Some people advised avoiding mobile detailers entirely in favor of shops — while many pointed out that skilled mobile detailers deliver work comparable to experienced shops.

Young detailers

Young detailers shared their stories too: a 21-year-old stressed research, practice and word of mouth; a 16-year-old admitted to limited experience but a real passion for cars. High demand means there’s room for both budget and high-end detailers.

How to find a good detailer

  • Check credentials and reviews — look for a proven track record and positive reviews.
  • Look at the portfolio — photos of previous jobs show what a detailer can really do.
  • Ask for recommendations from friends, family and local car enthusiasts.
  • Prioritize experience and training.
  • Be wary of gimmicks — choose tried-and-true methods over social-media trends.
  • Consider specialization — for paint correction or ceramic coating, pick a specialist.

The market may be crowded, but there are still many skilled professionals. A little research helps you find the one who will exceed your expectations.
